Irv was one of the partners at a small St. Louis ad agency with Sid Savan and Harry Gibbs. Their first big client was Community Federal Savings and Loan. The idea of the 4,000 mailboxes becoming “branch offices” of the company and the ubiquitous “Community Federal Savings and Loan” jingle came from their agency. Likewise, Chapman’s ice cream became known for its “subtle little difference.” The self-deprecating Van Dyke beer commercials gained national recognition and were so successful, they put the small St. Charles brewery out of business because they couldn’t keep up with the demand. Over the years, the advertising agency had an ever-changing cast of partners, various names and various clients. Irv Hammerman retired from advertising at the age of 80.
