The Age of Steel dates back to The Mississippi Handels Zeitung (The Journal of Commerce) -A German weekly founded in 1857, and which, in 1861, became the English Journal of Commerce. Robert M. Widmar, who was born in Dresden, Germany, was the published of the Zeitung; he died in 1866 and The Journal passed into the hands of Wolcott & Hume. In 1878 it became the property of the Journal of Commerce Company, and in 1880 its name was changed to the Age of Steel. Since 1883 William A. Barnes has been the managing editor of the paper and president of the publishing company. The Age of Steel has a large circulation among those who are interested in the steel industry, and is a recognized authority throughout the country.
