The first German newspaper published in Illinois was Der Freiheitsbote fur Illinois, published in Belleville but printed in St. Louis. It appeared in the year 1840 during the Van Buren-Harrison campaign. For three months was titled Freiheitsbote fur Illinois und Missouri.
