The St. Louis-born editor and journalist started his journalism career at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch before becoming a crime reporter and war correspondent for the New York World in 1909. During his tenure there, he became recognized as an authority on Germany and won three Pulitzer Prizes, one of which was for the series of articles titled “Inside the German Empire.” He is also credited with establishing the first op-ed page in 1921 and coining the phrase “Cold War.”
