Much of Dick Weiss’ contribution to the St. Louis journalism community was behind-the-scenes. For over 30 years he was an editor, writing coach and writer at the Post-Dispatch. While his by-line was not uncommon, much of his energy was focused on the development of enterprise stories and one-on-one coaching of the paper’s reporters. Dick conducted writing seminars for the paper’s newsroom staff of over 300 people, and that coaching continued at his own company, WeissWrite, when he left the Post. In 2008, Dick was one of the group of journalists that founded the St. Louis Beacon, an independent on-line news service that later merged with KWMU. Later he founded the River City Journalism Fund to help create awareness of marginalized populations.
