John Carney ignored his father Jack’s advice to avoid a career in radio. His career began in 1984 on a Denver radio station, followed by KFRU in Columbia, Mo. Returning to his hometown St. Louis in 1986, he was paired with Mort Crowley and Grant Horton at KXOK. His other stops include KSD, WIBV and WEW. In 1998, Carney followed in his father’s footsteps when he signed on at KMOX replacing the legendary Jim White. John remained at KMOX for 13 years, after which he was part of the inaugural KTRS line up with other Hall of Fame members Bill Wilkerson and Jim Holder. Away from the station, John started a charitable foundation, Carney’s Kids, an all-volunteer organization devoted to improving the lives of children. The Carneys have joined the Pulitzers, Bucks and Peters families as parent-and-child St. Louis Media Hall of Famers.
