In 1981, Ed left his announcing job at KSD Radio to become program director at KMOX-FM, guiding that station through an identity change. CBS Corporate, owners of the station, decided to aggressively pursue a younger market and switched their company-owned FM stations to the Hot Hit Radio format. That station became KHTR. Ed was the talent behind the station’s sound, creating playlists and overseeing the hiring of new staff. The results were one for the history books: Within months of the format change KHTR zoomed upward in the ratings, becoming the #2 station in St. Louis second only to sister station KMOX. Following his success in St. Louis, he moved to Los Angeles to perform the same conversion on a CBS FM station there. Over the next 24 years, Ed’s national reputation took him to programming positions in several other major markets.
