Clay Felker

Born in Webster Groves, Clay Felker was a magazine editor and journalist who co-founded New York magazine in 1968. The New York Times wrote, in 1995, “Few journalists have left a more enduring imprint on late 20th-century journalism … than Clay Felker.” He was also recognized for funding the first issue of Ms. Magazine and was feature editor of Esquire, owning the publication from 1977-79. He was on the team that created Sports Illustrated, and during his career, worked for Time, AdWeek, Life, the New York Herald Tribune and the Village Voice, and, according to novelist Tom Wolfe, ranks with Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone for or having brought out magazines that had a new take on life in America.
