Betty Lee and Joseph Palmer were journalism pioneers and among the co-founders of The Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists in 1976. In 1970, they co-founded and edited PROUD Magazine which was written and published in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood. PROUD reported on issues of particular interest to African American residents in the greater St. Louis area. A New Jersey native, Betty graduated from Fisk and Howard Universities, taught school in Kirkwood and helped produce the Proud television show on KPLR-TV. She also worked as an aide to Rep. William L. Clay and was director of public relations for the U.S. House Post Office and Civil Service Committee.
