Joseph Palmer and Betty Lee were journalism pioneers and among the co-founders of The Greater St. Louis Association of Black Journalists in 1976. In 1970, they co-founded and edited PROUD Magazine which was written and published in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood. PROUD reported on issues of particular interest to African American residents in the greater St. Louis area.
Born in St. Louis, Joseph dedicated his time to minority-owned businesses and mentoring mass communication students and young reporters. He also published the Jeff-Vander-Lou News and assumed editorial duties for the paper, which was published monthly in cooperation with the staff of Proud Magazine. He served as a cable TV host and businessman who managed ventures in telemarketing and internet access.
